Match Report - Leatherhead vs Brentford XI

29/07/2023 at 15:00 at Fetcham Grove

Overview of the Teams

Brentford XI came to Fetcham Grove with their youth team and look to try some new players during the game.  Brentford looked like a very youthful team with many players coming from there under 18 squad.

Leatherhead Came into this match unbeaten in the last four games looking for this to be the fifth as they look to continue their fantastic preseason form.  With the season fast approaching this would be a good test for Leatherhead.

Game Overview

Leatherhead started the game strongly with control of the game from the start and being able to pass the ball around with very little pressure from the Brentford side.  The Brentford side showed their inexperience when the Brentford defender missed placed a pass back to the Goalkeeper of Reggie Rose, which lead to the first corner of the game.

The first real change came in the 12 minutes after the high press of Leatherhead led to Tyler Cox dispossessing the Brentford defender and having an attempt on goal from just outside the box which Rose was able to collect easily.

The breakthrough came through for Leatherhead when Tyler Cox’s skilled through a couple of the Brentford defence and scored a well-placed goal to put leatherhead ahead.

Leatherhead should have gone two goals up when Dave Tarpey shot was clearly brilliant off the line by the Brentford defence.

Brentford rarely got to the final third in the first half, but their best chance of the half came from Emeka Peters, when he chased down the through ball heading toward the corner and put in a beautiful cross begging to be put in the back of the net.  Unfortunately, the Brentford Trialist was unable to control the ball and shot headed wide of the goal.

The first half was control by leatherhead being able to pass the ball around comfortable and the high press of leatherhead made life difficult for the Brentford men.

Early in the second half Brentford came out looking all fired up and was looking for the equalizer, however Leatherhead stood strong, and Brentford was not able to get a breakthrough.

With both sides making several substitutions the dynamic of the game changed with leatherhead controlling the ball and trying to see through the game.

Brentford once again showed their inexperience when the Brentford defender passed the ball back to the goalie Rose which he picked up.  This led to an indirect free kick which Kenny Beaney pass the ball to the Leatherhead skipper Tarpey, but the shot was blocked by the Brentford defence.

Leatherhead a chance to end the game completely when Leatherheads Elechi was brought down in the box, however Beaney produces a poor spot kick which Rose was able to save easily.

Leatherhead was able to control the game with their experience to end the game 1-0 with pass the ball around.

In the End this was an easy win for Leatherhead which should have scored a few more goal. Unfortunately, it was the lack of experience which cost Brentford the game but hopefully the young players have lot some through from today’s game which can help them in the future.
